Synopsis: On a cold New Year’s Eve in London 1849, a little girl tries to sell matches on the streets to passersby. She is among many children who live on the street. Some of the children use other means to survive such as picking pockets or begging.  The cholera epidemic has made many of them orphans. The Little Match Girl comes across strangers who are kind to her but do not offer her a place to stay. As sunset approaches, everyone else has gone to celebrate the New Year and she is left to try to pass the night in the cold. Alone, she remembers her grandmother that has passed away. Her grandmother tells her stories to comfort her and recites the bible. When her memories fade and the cold surroundings return, she tries to lights matches to keep herself warm. Again, a vision of her grandmother appears and the little match girl is eager to join her. When the vision begins to go dark the little match girl desperately tries to light all the matches so that the vision would not leave her. At last, with a bouquet of lighted matches in her hands, her grandmother comes to her side and tells her that it’s time to go home. Sobbing from joy, the match girl embraces her grandmother and together they go to heaven. The next morning when the villagers find the little match girl, they are grieved at her loss and are repentant. This classic Hans Christian Andersen tale has been adapted so that the villagers have an opportunity for redemption in the end. This story offers a glimpse into the lives of the invisible poor while also showing that people are often good at heart but sometimes don’t act on the good intentions. It also shows us that it’s never too late to do the right thing. Filled with funny and lovable supporting characters, this musical is bound to be the next big holiday musical.
