This is a guide for those who are going to audition for a play.
This is only thoughts of a few directors so we can only tell you what we're looking for. Hope this helps!
Should I prepare something to sing?

Yes, preferably something from Broadway. You can bring a backup CD or sheet music for an accompanist to follow. Remember that it needs to be in your vocal range.
Does everyone have to be a singer to audition?
NO. There are non singing roles in just about every musical. If you know that you're auditioning for a non singing role please mark it on your audition sheet. Please be aware of who the non singing roles are in the script.
What else can I do to
prepare?
You'll be asked to read something from the script. Look into
the play you're auditioning for. Familiarize yourself with the story
line and characters of the show. See if a movie has been made
from the play. If so, go and rent it.

What are we looking for?
#1 Speak loud and clear! Pronounce your words. Remember that even the best actors have to be heard in order to tell the story in the play.
#2 We need to see your personality. Get animated. Simply put, we have to see the spark, especially if you want that big role in the next production.
#3 Remember to be honest about your casting desires. Tell us what you want. But keep in mind that a person in a starring role has to devote alot more time to a production than other cast members and if you have alot of time constraints or conflicts then it would not be feasible to audition for a big role.
What about dancing?

You don't have to be a dancer to dance.
In fact, we prefer to work with people who don't have alot of experience because usually you come with an open mind and willing spirit. We're looking to your ability to follow directions, your level of coordination skill, and to see if you can move gracefully and learn steps in a fairly short amount of time.

A few thoughts to chew on.
Remember that getting cast in a play is a huge undertaking.
You're embarking on a 13 week journey with about 50 other people that are all relying on you to memorize your lines, learn your blocking, sing your songs, and most important of all BE THERE.
In a world that is so full of choices for activities it's hard to juggle all the interests you may have. Ask yourself, do I have the time to commit?
